Making Strawberry Tanghulu in the Microwave
Strawberries are so delicious this season! While the prices might be a bit higher than before, we can still enjoy this sweet fruit. My recent batch of strawberries wasn’t as sweet as I’d hoped, so I decided to make tanghulu! I tried making it quickly using the microwave, and it was a breeze. This recipe creates a thin, crisp sugar coating that perfectly complements the natural sweetness of the strawberries.
Ingredients- 6 strawberries
- 8 Tbsp granulated sugar
- 4 Tbsp water
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, wash the strawberries thoroughly under running water. Gently rinse them and then carefully remove the green stems. Leaving the stems on can affect how evenly the sugar coating adheres later.
Step 2
Next, skewer the prepared strawberries onto small skewers or toothpicks, one by one. This makes it much easier to dip and handle them in the sugar syrup. Set them aside for a moment to allow any excess water to drain off.
Step 3
Now, let’s make the delicious sugar coating. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine 8 tablespoons of granulated sugar with 4 tablespoons of water. Getting this ratio right is key to achieving a crispy coating.
Step 4
Place the bowl with the sugar and water mixture into the microwave and heat in 30-second intervals. It’s important to avoid overheating it from the start, so take it out periodically to check the syrup’s consistency. Repeat this process at least 5 times, or until the syrup starts to bubble and thickens slightly.
Step 5
To test if the syrup is ready, prepare a cup of cold water. Drip a drop or two of the hot sugar syrup into the cold water. If the syrup forms a solid lump that hardens and breaks when touched, or if it breaks cleanly when dripped from a spoon instead of stretching like taffy, it’s perfectly done! The ideal consistency is when it snaps crisply, like a small twig. If it’s still too runny, continue microwaving in 30-second bursts until it reaches the desired hardness.
Step 6
Carefully dip the skewered strawberries into the hot sugar syrup. Gently swirl them to ensure an even coating of the sugar syrup around the entire strawberry. Work quickly, as dipping for too long can cause the strawberries to cook.
Step 7
Remove the coated strawberries and immediately place them on a cooling rack or parchment paper to cool completely. The tanghulu is ready once the sugar coating has fully hardened for that satisfying crunch. Ta-da! Your easy microwave strawberry tanghulu is complete. Isn’t it incredibly simple? Now you can make small batches anytime without the hassle of using a saucepan!
Step 8
The thin, translucent sugar coating encasing the vibrant strawberries looks absolutely beautiful! Take a bite and enjoy the satisfying crispness and burst of sweetness.
