Main Ingredients

  • 500g Daikon Radish (about 1/3 of a medium radish)
  • 2 Tbsp Perilla Oil (Deulgireum)
  • 1 tsp Minced Garlic
  • 1/2 tsp Korean Sea Salt (or adjust to taste)
  • 1 Tbsp Toasted Perilla Seed Powder (Deulkkae Garu)
  • 1 Tbsp Finely Chopped Scallions or Green Onions (optional)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Thoroughly wash the daikon radish, peel it, and then julienne it into thin strips, about 0.3-0.5cm thick. Cutting them to a uniform thickness will help them cook evenly; if they are too thick, they will take longer to soften.

Step 1

Step 2

Place all the julienned radish into a wide pot or pan. Drizzle generously with 2 tablespoons of perilla oil for a rich, nutty flavor. Gently toss the radish with your hands to ensure the oil coats every strand.

Step 2

Step 3

Cover the pot with a lid and cook the radish over very low heat. This method, using a lid and low heat, allows the radish to release its natural moisture and steam, ensuring it cooks gently and becomes tender without burning.

Step 3

Step 4

After cooking for about 20 minutes, check if the radish has turned translucent and is tender enough to bend easily. Once tender, add 1 teaspoon of minced garlic, 1/2 teaspoon of Korean sea salt, 1 tablespoon of toasted perilla seed powder, and finally, 1 tablespoon of finely chopped scallions or green onions. Gently mix everything together until well combined. Your delicious Munamul is now ready! Taste and adjust seasoning with more salt or perilla seed powder if needed.
